Original Medicare leaves gaps — deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that can add up fast. Medigap plans from private insurers fill those gaps, giving you predictable, manageable costs.
Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is extra coverage you purchase from a private insurance company to help pay your share of out-of-pocket costs under Original Medicare — things like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that Part A and Part B don't fully cover.
To buy a Medigap policy you must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B. When you receive care, Medicare pays its approved share first, then your Medigap plan pays its portion. In most cases, the insurer receives your Part B claim information directly from Medicare — no paperwork for you.
💡 Note: Medigap plans sold after 2005 do not include prescription drug coverage. If you want drug coverage, you'll need a separate Part D plan.
Medigap policies are standardized and named by letters — Plan A, Plan B, Plan G, Plan K, Plan N, and so on. The benefits within each lettered plan are identical no matter which insurer sells it. The only meaningful difference between two Plan G policies is the monthly premium. This makes comparison shopping straightforward.

Depending on the plan you choose, Medigap can cover:
Medigap is not a comprehensive insurance product. It does not cover long-term custodial care, vision, dental, hearing aids, or private-duty nursing. For those needs, a Medicare Advantage plan or separate standalone coverage may be more appropriate.
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts the first month you have Medicare Part B and are 65 or older. This 6-month window is your best opportunity: insurers cannot deny you coverage or charge more based on pre-existing health conditions. After this window closes, you may be subject to medical underwriting — meaning you could be denied or charged higher premiums based on your health history.
Premiums vary by plan type, insurer, location, and how the company sets its rates (community-rated, issue-age-rated, or attained-age-rated). Working with an independent agent means we can shop multiple carriers on your behalf to find the best value for the coverage you need.
